My Experience With Cosmetic Injections

I decided to write this blog post because when I was first considering cosmetic injections, I had so many questions and just wanted an honest opinion on if it was for me. Back in 2018, I was starting to get unhappy with the wrinkles forming on my forehead and what we often call, “frown lines.” I had seen other bloggers and influencers talk about Botox on Instagram, but I still felt like it was somewhat taboo and even now I think it can be misunderstood.

My mantra in life has always been, do what makes you happy or do what makes you feel good. For me, I didn’t like that my makeup was settling into wrinkles and I wanted to do what I could to prevent them from continuing to form at the pace that they were.

Funny enough, my mom and I make the same “frown” when we are happy, mad, and even just concentrating. The old saying, “Don’t frown, you’ll cause wrinkles” couldn’t be more true in this sense. My frown lines were my biggest insecurity at the time.

Botox before & after of my resting Face (No botox vs. after two treatments over the last year)

As you can see, the Botox/Dysport injections did not change my appearance, they only relaxed the muscles to get rid of those fine lines. I started off very gradually only treating my frown lines and forehead, and still continue to treat those areas. Now my skin is smooth and those lines have essentially disappeared.

Before and after of muscle movement after a Botox treatment in my frown lines and added chin filler.

Up until recently, I had never gotten filler but I decided to get two syringes of Restylane Lyft in my chin to improve my side profile, add volume and create feminine shape. See below for my before and after.

The cheeks, jaw line, chin, tear troughs and lips are very common places to add filler. If you’re wanting a professional opinion on any of those treatments, share your thoughts with your injector and they’ll tell you what they think will look best!

Before I jump into the FAQs, I am frequently asked, is it worth it? For me, 100% YES! My skin is smoother, my wrinkles have basically disappeared and I feel much better in my skin. Any sort of cosmetic procedure is a personal decision, but if it makes you happy there is no shame in that.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is it expensive?

Yes and no. Any type of cosmetic service you get will cost you, and it completely depends on how much and what type injections you plan to get. In my experience, botox ranges anywhere from $9 – $13 per unit depending on the experience of the injector, if they work under a plastic surgeon, their overhead cost, etc. I recommend going in for a consultation first and starting gradual so you know what you like before you spend a lot of money. Keep in mind, this is also your face! You don’t want “cheap” service when it comes to your beauty.

Does it hurt?

It depends on what you get done. If you are someone who is sensitive to needles, you may experience minor discomfort when getting neurotoxin injections, but I would personally rate it a 1-2/10 on the pain scale. They are very small needles and it is just a little pinch and it’s over. You may experience a higher pain level if you get filler, even still, it is not extremely painful. Your injector may be able to provide numbing cream, a cool compress or a distraction device to keep your mind busy. I did experience minor tenderness after getting filler, but it subsided after 3-4 days.

How much do I need?

Setting up a consultation with a professional injector will be the best way for you to learn how many units you’ll need. We all have different facial structures (and expressions) that will go into their professional opinion. It also depends on your age and if you’ve ever treated those areas. I have found that less is more. If you start gradual, you’ll get a sense of how you prefer your muscle movement.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is another neurotoxin, like Botox, that is FDA approved to treat and prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Most injectors offer both Botox and Dysport. Some people prefer one over the other, but I’ve never noticed a major difference. I will typically choose the one that has the better promotion at the time of my appointment.

How do I find an injector in my area?

If you are local to the St. Louis area, I highly recommend Melanie Murray with STL Injections. She is a Nurse Practitioner with seven years of experience in aesthetics. She customizes her treatments based on what her patients want, without over injecting. Not to mention she is super sweet and down to earth! If you want to book with her, click on her website or contact her on Instagram. If you are not local, do your research! In my opinion, the best way to find an injector is to search on Instagram. Look for someone with a reputable account who consistently posts photos of their work. Ensure they have a business website and even check Google, Facebook or Yelp to see if they have customer reviews. Always, always start with a consultation to make sure you feel good about the person treating you. An initial consultation should be free of charge.

Will I bruise?

It’s possible! I am someone who bruises very easily, and I have had very minor, surface level bruises after getting neurotoxin injections. I would recommend that you do not get any sort of injection before a major life event (i.e. a wedding, photoshoot, etc.) so you have plenty of time to get used to it.

Will it change the appearance of my face?

Neurotoxin injections such as Botox or Dysport do not change your appearance. The injections are a preventative measure to relax the muscles in your face (and your facial expressions) that cause wrinkles. Filler is meant to change your appearance. However, just like botox, you can start gradual for a very subtle change.

Should I leave a tip?

Most injectors will not accept tips because it is considered a medical procedure. However, if you want to know if they accept tips don’t hesitate to ask. I promise it’s not rude!

Let me know in the comments if you have any other questions and I will add those to my FAQs!
